AbstractThis program aims to develop a novel composite PEM for multifunctional power generating structures. The innovation in the present effort is to take advantage of our capability and make use of the superior mechanical properties of the nanomaterial-based reinforcements including large aspect ratios, high tensile strength, and low density, which may result in significant increase in the tensile modulus of composite PEM, while the transport properties of the composite membrane that are relevant to fuel cell performance may not to be significantly compromised. The outcome of the present effort may provide the needed product to the Army. Such products will also have a significant commercialization potential. The proposed Phase II effort will build on the Phase I success to complete the development of the said composite PEM, and to lay a foundation for manufacturing commercially viable products in Phase III.
