This program aims to develop a novel nanotube-reinforced composite PEM for multifunctional power generating structures. The innovation in the present effort is to take advantage of our capability and make use of the superior mechanical properties of the nanotubes including large aspect ratios, high tensile strength, and low density, which may result in significant increase in the tensile modulus of the nanotube-reinforced composite PEM, while the transport properties of the composite membrane that are relevant to fuel cell performance may not to be significantly compromised. The outcome of the present effort may provide the needed product to the Army. Such products will also have a significant commercialization potential.
