AbstractThe aim of this project is to build a wireless corrosion monitoring system that is specifically designed for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Such systems are key elements in assuring the performance and reliability of the JSF while minimizing lifecycle costs associated with deteriorating nonmetallic and metallic material. The technology builds on the Analatom Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) corrosion sensor technology. In Phase I work has been done in building a representative 6-8 node sensor network. This prototype was architected to have significant monitoring and 802.11b transmission capabilities. Details such as system strategies for data sampling, corrosion algorithms, and adoption of the best software protocols have also been researched in Phase I. The objective of Phase II is to migrate the system onto a flight-worthy multi-node system using the 3M MicroflexTM packaging technology. Wireless capabilities will be migrated to the ZigBee Wireless system to minimize power consumption. The Phase II system prototype will achieve MIL SPEC requirements so that it can be flight tested and operated at a later date (at the end of or beyond Phase II). The project, though novel, presents no technological risk. Objects and resources have been carefully planned to ensure that all goals are obtainable.
