Abstract

We propose development and field testing of a high frequency, miniaturized electron spin resonance spectrometer (X-band Micro-ESR) to measure degradation of marine lubricants, gear oils and hydraulic oils in real time. Lubricants and other fluids of interest will flow continuously through the sensor during operation and condition information is transmitted electronically to the end user. The enhanced sensitivity of the proposed X-band Micro-ESR allows us to detect a wide range of anomalous conditions including the onset of thermal coking and impending catastrophic failure of the lubricant.
