Abstract
THE DESTRUCTION OF ORGANIC HAZARDOUS WASTE BY ELECTRIC ARC PYROLYSIS HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO BE TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE BY OTHERS. THE PRINCIPAL PROBLEMS LIE IN (1) THE SHORT LIFEOF THE ELECTRODES (AND RELATED STRUCTURES) DUE TO THE HIGH TEMPERATURES INVOLVED, AND (2) THE RELATIVELY HIGH COST OF THE ELECTRIC POWER NEEDED. APPLIED RESEARCH ASSOCIATES, INC. PROPOSE TO DESTROY ORGANIC HAZARDOUS WASTE BY THE IMPROVED PATENTED HDI (HARD DISCHARGE IGNITION) ELECTRIC ARCPROCESS WHICH HAS A HIGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND IN WHICH THE ELECTRODES ARE KEPT COOL BY ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF THE ARC TIMING AND POSITION. THE ELECTRICAL POWER COST IS MINIMIZEDTHROUGH SPECIAL HEAT EXCHANGE METHODS AND USE OF EXHAUST HEAT FOR ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION. PHASE I IS THE EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF THE APPROACH.
