Abstract
A SMALL, RUGGED, ANGULAR VELOCITY SENSOR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED RECENTLY BASED ON THE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC (MHD) PHENOMENON. THE SENSOR IS APPROXIMATELY ON CUBIC INCH IN VOLUME AND HAS AN RMS NOISE LEVEL OF 10 -4 MILLIRADIANS IN THE 2 TO 2000 HZ. REGION. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL UTILIZE THIS RECENT TECHNOLOGY TO DEVELOP SENSORS TO MEASURE THE ANGULAR MOTION OF CANNON MUZZLES. EXISTING COMPUTER PROGRAMS CONTAINING A DETAILED MODEL OF MHD SENSORS WILL BE USED DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE SENSOR UTILIZES COMMON MATERIALS AND STANDARD MACHINE SHOP TECHNIQUES. THE OBJECTIVE IS A THREE-AXIS INERTIAL ANGULAR RATE SENSOR HVING A NOISE LEVEL LESS THN 10 -2 MILLIRADIANS OVER A BRANDWIDTH OF 25 KILOHERTZ. THE APPLICATIONS OF THIS DEVICE ARE BOTH AS A DIAGNOSTIC SENSOR DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF CANNON SYSTEM AND AS A CONTROL SENSOR FOR STABILIZING AND AIMING CANNONS.
