Abstract
There is little question that drowsy driving and driver inattention are significant problems leading to large numbers of accident and loss of life. These sentiments are strongly confirmed in two recently published NHTSA reports make clear the relationship between driver inattention and vehicle crashes and near-crashes. Our approach will be based on measuring the standard measures of fatigue and potentially highly correlated measures of non-obtrusive measures that can be implemented within a commercial vehicle. The goal of this effort is to develop a prototype storyboard of a feasible in-vehicle system that predicts driver fatigue and educates the driver on their performances as it relates to fatigue and the potential dangers. This will add to the work that NHTSA has done in recent years by introducing a variety of material to help drivers make better decisions. Our approach augments this by providing an in-vehicle system for detection and feedback to the driver.
