Abstract
In Phase II of this SBIR program, Areté Associates proposes to demonstrate the Inboard Magnetic Quieting System (IMaQS) and develop the Electric Magnetic Matched Field Tracker (EMMFT) as two complementary aspects of a next-generation magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) system that will enable anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft to search, localize, detect, and track submerged targets more effectively. IMaQS will eliminate the need for a towed sensor by utilizing a suite of auxiliary motion and noise sensors to reduce inboard noise on a small platform to levels equal or superior to current fixed wing MAD systems and have the additional benefit of robust performance during maneuvers. EMMFT will use the IMaQS-compensated magnetic field data to detect and continually improve localization on the target throughout any maneuvers, exploiting electric dipole signatures in addition to the traditional magnetic dipole moment. These breakthroughs will open the possibility of littoral ASW missions carried out by small, highly maneuverable platforms such as the Fire Scout against modern, small targets.
