Abstract
THE MAJOR LIMITING RELIABILITY COMPONENT OF CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS HAS ALWAYS BEEN SEALS. BESIDES CONTRIBUTING TO GAS CONTAMINATION AND DEBRIS PARTICLE ACCUMULATION, SEALS HAVE FAILED PHYSICALLY. AS A RESULT, SEALS HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAJORITY OF CRYOGENIC LIQUEFACTION AND REFRIGERATION SYSTEM FAILURES. A POTENTIALLY VIABLE SOLUTION IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MULTISEGMENT CERAMIC RING CRYOGENIC SEAL EMPLOYING HARD-ON-HARD WEAR-RESISTANT MATERIALS COMBINATION, THAT IS, AN UNLUBRICATED HARD MATERIAL SEALING AGAINST ANOTHER HARD MATERIAL WITH MINIMAL ENSUING WEAR. THIS APPROACH HAS BEEN UTILIZED BEFORE FOR SEALS ON MACHINERY OPERATING IN BOTH ABRASIVE AND EXTREME-TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTS. THE PHASE I PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS THE LABORATORY TESTING OF A PROTOTYPE CRYOGENICSEAL PROMISING 30,000 HOURS MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURES (MTBF) AND SUITABLE FOR INTEGRATION WITH CRYOCOOLERS. DIVIDED INTO FOUR TASKS, PHASE I INCLUDES FINAL ANALYSES, DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF THE LABORATORY PROTOTYPE SEAL, DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF THE LABORATORY TEST SYSTEM, AND LABORATORY TESTING OF THE SEAL AT AMBIENT AND CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES. THE ANTICIPATED RESULTS ARE THE MEASUREMENT OF THE THERMODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY OF THE CRYOGENIC SEAL, EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF THE SEAL ANALYTICAL DESIGN TOOLS, AND PREPARATION OF DESIGN DRAWINGS OF THE CRYOGENIC SEAL INTEGRATED WITH AN OFF-THE-SHELF CRYOCOOLER.
