Abstract

Aspen Systems will develop high efficiency/high temperature Carbon-Nitride films to meet the design objectives of high energy density capacitors (HEDC) for energy storage in pulsed power systems (>15MJ/kg). Phase I will fabricate samples of film for dielectric analysis. The dielectric properties of these materials will be evaluated using the most advanced computational techniques available. Initial, rigorous calculations will be performed based on quantum mechanical models (DMol). The development of high strength, low loss dielectrics will have immediate application in electric rail gun applications and compact, lightweight energy store required for mobile systems (e.g. tanks, ships). Capacitors manufactured from these materials will find immediate application in commercial products such as high power filter capacitors.
