The Navy has for some time been moving toward computer-based e-learning systems to address both of these needs. E-learning systems minimize the need for lengthy and expensive chalk-n-talk training - enabling a wide range of skills and refresher training as needed. Todays computer based training (CBT) systems typically require trainees to proceed through a lengthy sequence of formal (usually written) instruction, exercise participation, and computer-based testing and feedback. The rigidness and rote nature of these e-learning systems diminish their training value and indicate the desirability of an adaptive training approach.
The Adaptive Gaming Environment for Submarines (AGE-S) addresses the need for adaptive training in the following ways: (1) AGE-S provides adaptive navigation through a course - driven by a statistical approach in which the difficulty of each question (or trial) is calibrated within a population, such that the performance of the trainee measured in-situ is compared to a population score to make a navigation decision, (2) AGE-S also addresses adaptive feedback timing (immediate vs. deferred), adaptive feedback type (process information vs. the correct answer), and adaptive modality (e.g. written, video, haptic).
